Mount Houroku & Boating on Lake Mikawa (Aichi)
Tour Code: OK1017
Tour Fee: 8300 Discount Price: 6800

Date: Saturday, October 17th

We begin with a visit to Mount Houroku, where we will hike up to the lookout. It is a short (30 minutes) but strenuous hike, so please wear appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle. You need to keep fairly quiet during the climb and keep a sharp lookout, as we sometimes encounter kamoshika, monkeys and other wildlife. Although it is Japan’s manufacturing powerhouse, most of Aichi actually consists of steep mountains and beautiful isolated valleys. From the summit of Mount Houroku, we can see a vast vista – not only over Toyota and Okazaki, but on clear days as far as Nagoya, the Suzuka range west of Nagoya and the foothills of the Japan alps.

Please bring a picnic lunch. We’ll have something to eat at the lookout, or in the forest.
After descending from the peak, we drive through the steep mountains to our next destination. Lake Mikawa is a large reservoir, stored behind Habu Dam. Completed in 1962, the dam is popular amongst Japan’s “dam otaku”. After seeing the sites, we can rent rowboats and have the chance to explore areas of the lake away from the dam site. The shores of the lake are thickly forested and home to a lot of bird life and the scenery is quite beautiful.
