Kawashima Aqua, Gujo Hachiman (Gifu)
Tour Code: OK1018
Tour Fee: 9300 Discount Price: 7800
Date: Sunday, October 18th
We drive towards Gifu, stopping at Kawashima Aqua to visit the amazing freshwater fish aquarium & gardens. We then drive up the Nagara River valley until we reach the picturesque castle town of Gujo Hachiman.
Gujo Hachiman has three rivers flowing through it, and many of the traditional streetscapes have been carefully preserved. It was described by the wonderful English writer Alan Booth in “Looking for the Lost” as being “like an Edo-era stage set”. We will visit the mountaintop castle, and then walk through the narrow streets and laneways visiting some fine temples, shrines and shops. One of the shops we will visit is a workshop (“sampuru koubou”) that produces and sells the plastic food models that you often see outside restaurants throughout Japan. Makes for a surreal souvenir!
The town is incredible, but nearby there are some amazing limestone caves, including one with the highest underground waterfall in Japan. The cave alone is a must see, the waterfall absolutely breathtaking.
