Date: Saturday-Monday, October 10th-12th

October 13th is a national holiday in Japan (“taiku-no-hi“), and what better way to enjoy the long weekend than in Japan’s most beautiful valley, Kamikochi.

We head into Nagano and first visit Matsumoto. Our destinations here are the famous Matsumoto castle and the Kyuu-Kaichi school. The castle is a national treasure and includes a fascinating museum, and great 360 degree views of the alps. The school is a perfect example of Meiji era architecture, and a rare opportunity to explore.

From Matsumoto, we head to Hirayu Onsen. Located deep in the alps, we can enjoy massive waterfalls, some great country cooking, and warm up with a long soak in an outdoor natural spring.

To protect the fragile alpine environment from emissions, private vehicles are banned from entering the Kamikochi valley, so we will head in by bus. Kamikochi is spectacular, and at this time of year, the altitude means that Autumn arrives early. We can spend the whole day hiking along the Azusa river to the beautiful Myojin pond. It is fairly easy hiking, mostly flat, and the scenery is awesome.

On Monday we leave Hirayu Onsen and head across the mountains to Takayama in Gifu prefecture. Our destinations in Takayama include the perfectly preserved Takayama Jinya, the old streetscapes (good for souvenir shopping), a sake brewery and the ancient Kokubunji temple. There will be some free time for exploring.

The tour fee includes all admissions and transport, accommodation, breakfast and evening meals.
