(1/11) Introduction: This program is a very intensive Japanese summer program available for 7 or 9 weeks duration. A winter program is scheduled for southern hemisphere summer holidays.
The multilevel program is designed to enable students to be able to invest in a high quality program designed to help you “skip” a year of college Japanese classes. For instance someone who has completed their first year of Japanese, should have the proficiency required of a third year student by the end of the course.
The curriculum is designed to rapidly improve your listening comprehension, speaking skills, accent reduction, reading comprehension, and ability to compose written work (online and/or by handwriting).
The program averages 30 classes per week including intensive language learning in small groups (maximum class size is just 6) with highly qualified and experienced faculty recruited from university Japanese departments around the world and coordinated by ALC faculty. All class coordinators have Masters degrees. Each class is taught by a team using the direct method. The small size of the class ensures individual attention despite summer being the peak season, and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking and communication skills.
You will also receive a private tutorial each and every week. The opportunity to invest in language skills through an intensive immersion course in Japan is a rare one, and our one-to-one tutorials are designed to help you achieve the maximum possible progress. Each tutorial is taught by the same instructor, often by your team leader, who will be your academic adviser for the duration of the program. The designated instructor will know your strengths and weaknesses, help you manage your study plan, and be able to draw upon their extensive experience.
There are also 3 Field Trips enable you to learn in context. Each has a different theme and destination. The first is focused on the art of “monozukuri” and includes visits to modern mass production manufacturing plants (Toyota Motor) and traditional craft makers. The second has “sekaiisan” as the theme, and involves an overnight visit to Kyoto and other historic sites enroute. The Kyoto field trip is scheduled for July 16th/17th, the height of the famous Gion Festival. The third trip contrasts the mega-cities such as Tokyo and Osaka (theme is urbanization – “toshika”), with the beautiful remote areas to the northeast. We will explore historic sites such as Tenonji, abandoned valleys & villages, a senmaida, and a two hundred year old sake brewery.
(2/11) Schedule: The program commences on a Thursday. Please schedule your arrival for no later than the day before commencement. The first day will involve an Orientation, Placement Interview, Listening Test and explanation of the curriculum. It is also possible to consult with faculty about preferred texts or learning materials, which you could use in study hall or as extra homework.
Each class period is of 50 minutes duration, with 10 minute breaks in between. Tea and coffee are provided.
Summers are hot & humid, so please dress for comfort. Light cotton clothing is advised. If you are planning to participate in the Mount Fuji Climb, please bring warm clothing as temperatures at the summit are often below zero. You will need a good dictionary. The school has wireless, so a laptop or a tablet can be very useful.

Classes are not scheduled on Public Holidays. During the Summer program, there is only one of these, “Umi-no-hi”. An optional tour is available if you wish to take a break from your studies, and the annual Mount Fuji Climb is usually scheduled for the first two days of this long weekend.

(4/11) Fees & Costs: There is a small registration fee of 5250 yen. This fee is waived if you have studied with us before. A Discount Fee is available for early payment (16 weeks prior to commencement), JET Program participants, students with a working holiday visa, or students enrolling via the studyabroad office of their college or university.
The calculator gives an approximate exchange rate. Our invoices are denominated in Japanese Yen and are valid for 55 days. Invoices may be issued in AUD/Euro/GBP/USD on request, but are only valid for the month during which they are issued.

(5/11) Accommodation: All applicants requiring accommodation will receive assistance from ALC and placement. The choices available are Private Apartment, Shared Apartment, and Homestay. (6/11) Entry Requirements: The minimum age at the time of commencement is 18 years. Before commencing the course, you need to have as an absolute minimum, have matriculated to college, have some college level studies, or a degree. You need to have studied Japanese before, know the on and kun readings (though not necessarily be able to write by hand) a minimum of 100 kanji, and have a very high level of motivation. Applicants from some countries may need to have Japan based guarantor before the Letter of Acceptance can be issued. Please check the Visas page to see if you will require a guarantor.
(7/11) Applications & Enrollment Procedure: All applications and procedures may be completed online, there is no requirement for an interview, referees or application essay.

b) Choose accommodation options if accommodation is needed.
c) Check visa requirements, especially the information regarding guarantors.
d) Complete online application form. Course Code is OKIJSP.
e) On receipt of invoice, confirm your enrollment via Fee Payment.
f) Receive your Letter of Acceptance and supporting documentation.
g) Purchase a return ticket to Japan if necessary.
h) If you need to apply for a visa, visit a Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
(8/11) Deadlines: The deadline for application is 6 weeks prior to commencement, however please note applications will close when the course reaches full capacity. For this reason, early application is advised.
(9/11) Payment Method: After an application is approved, ALC will issue an invoice (usually a PDF file sent via email, though paper copies can be sent). The preferred payment method is bank transfer. Please note that discounts are available for early payment.
