Mount Ontake is a volcano on the border of the Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It is famous for the scenery in Autumn, a really popular hiking destination, and not too bad for skiing during the winter either.
Unfortunately it erupted last week. Japan is one of the world’s most seismically active countries, and even a supposedly dormant volcano can erupt (usually just steam and gases), and often completely without warning. Even Mount Fuji will erupt sooner or later, even though the last eruption was in 1707. It just happens.
On Ontake, at least 60 climbers were trapped. Our hearts go out to them and to their families. We are unaffected in Aichi, and all services are normal, but the reminder that nature is not only beautiful but also beyond our control reminds us of where we live, and what we need to do.
